Cloudy with Joel Lamere

University Courses

Led by: Joel Lamere, Max Jarosz

The Cloudy Studio was positioned for two architectural agendas, the first to investigate and promote digital fabrication via the use of the robotic arm, and two interrogate architectural acoustics. The studio had three prompts, surface – spheroids – objects. Students began to research these two agendas and design with both in mind as they created surfaces that were aimed at diffusing or absorbing sound while also learning fabrication techniques of hot wire cutting and cnc-milling. For the next part of the studio, students moved into the round and had to use these strategies to design and fabricate helmets, a process that requires robotic fabrication to produce both interior and exterior architectural designs. These designs were augmented by the need to produce an interior condition (e.g. silence, hearing from one ear, or increased hearing) while also producing an exterior condition (e.g. reflection, absorption, or focusing sounds). The students used their knowledge from the first two sections to team up and design objects to be deployed in the studio space of the University of Miami School of Architecture. Although these plans were interrupted by the emergence of Covid-19.
